What Is Blue Moon Ice Cream Made of

Blue Moon Ice Cream: A Rich and creamy treat that looks like summer in a bowl. EASY & no churn.

blue moon ice cream

Today we take a break from our regularly scheduled cookies and cupcakes for Ice Cream. Summer is when I crave big scoops of this cold creamy treat. Ice cream is also one of my family's favorites. It hits the spot on these hot summer days. One of the things that makes ice cream so versatile and universal is that there are soooo many different flavors. Our big grocery store has at least 10 different freezer doors full!

From butter pecan to vanilla there is truly something for everyone.  One of my favorite less well known flavors is Blue Moon ice cream! I think you're going to love it as much as we do. Get your spoons ready and dig in!

What is Blue Moon Ice Cream?

It's often described as being the same color as a smurf! In fact, some people even refer to it as Smurf Ice Cream! If it's blue it has to taste good right? It is mostly sold in the upper midwest from Ohio to Wisconsin.

What Flavor Is It?

Wondering what blue moon ice cream tastes like? The flavor is fruity with strong raspberry and lemon flavors. This fruit mixture reminds me of the flavor of fruit loops or fruity pebbles. I know, it sounds wild right? I think the reason this ice cream is so popular is that it reminds us of childhood! It reminds me of  Saturday mornings eating my Fruit Loops in front of the tv while watching morning cartoons.(Usually Spongebob!) Memories like this lead me back to a simpler time.

Ingredient Notes

This particular recipe is made up of sweetened condensed milk, cold heavy cream, vanilla extract, raspberry extract, lemon extract, and blue gel food coloring. Use gel if you can, you'll need much less of it to get the vibrant blue shade.

Where Did It Originate?

It's hard to pin down the exact origins, but Nara Schoenberg from the Chicago Tribune wrote an article where she states the possible origins. The most likely origin is a man named Bill Sidon who was a flavor chemist for Petran products.

However, even this story is full of mystery. No one truly knows the exact origins which I think adds to its appeal. What I do know is that it's loved by millions across the country. So many people outside the Midwest love it that they order it online for big bucks and have it shipped to their homes, It is also a major craving for pregnant women across the country. In addition, children everywhere can't get enough of it. Regardless of where you live, you'll love this homemade version.

How To Make Blue Moon Ice Cream

The recipe is super simple.

First, beat your heavy whipping cream until it thickens. Then add in your sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and other extracts ,and fold it in until it's smooth. Next, add the food coloring and then stir again.

Finally, pour the ice cream mixture into a freezer safe container and freeze it for five to six hours or leave it overnight. I like to allow it to sit out about ten minutes before serving so it is easier to scoop.

How To Make No Churn Ice Cream

You may have noticed that I didn't churn this ice cream.I do have an ice cream maker, but it mostly collects dust in my basement! No churn ice cream is easier, and quicker!  You can make no churn ice cream very easily and you can play with whatever flavors you like. Who knows maybe you'll invent the next big ice cream flavor.

All you have to do for no churn ice cream is, fold some whipped cream into sweetened condensed milk. That alone will make a great ice cream or you can use it as a base like we did. Add in any flavors you want You could try adding cherries, oreos, or even cookie dough . Mix and match you favorite flavors together.

Who Invented Ice Cream?

This is an age old question. I've asked myself this many times while I enjoyed a large bowl or tall cone of ice cream. So I did a little searching and it seems there is no clear cut answer.

Many ancient civilizations used to get ice and snow from mountains and flavor it with fruit. Which seems quite a bit like a snow cone to me! However over the years it morphed into what we have today. Whoever invented it, I'd like to give them a big hug!

When was Ice Cream Invented?

As I stated above, there is no definite answer for when ice cream was invented. It's very likely the ice cream we know today was made in 16th century in Italy. The first mention of ice cream in America came in 1744 in a letter written by a guest of Maryland Governor William Bladen. It was spoken of in the New York Gazette in 1777.
